MAJOR UPDATE — October 29, 2026. The City of Monterey has now issued an October 26 construction solicitation for Veterans Park Bike Path, Segment 4 (NCP2435), providing a new status beyond the older neighborhood concept described below. Bids are due December 8, 2026, at 2 p.m. Pacific. The published tender describes widening part of Veterans Drive to accommodate a five-foot bicycle lane, together with tree removal, demolition, earthwork, asphalt paving, storm-drainage improvements, signs and striping. This roadside bike-lane scope is materially different from the older archived proposal for a separated trail through the park bowl; readers should use the current project specifications, not the historical illustration, when evaluating the actual plan. A mandatory site conference is scheduled for November 17 at 10 a.m. at Monterey Veterans Memorial Park, 1200 Veterans Drive; contractor questions close December 2 at 5 p.m. The City of Monterey official procurement portal, project 318564 contains the plan set and any amendments. This solicitation is an invitation for bids, not proof of construction or an awarded contract. The older $330,000 neighborhood concept estimate below must not be presented as the final bid amount or construction cost. Source summary of the city’s October 26 notice.
SKYLINE MONTEREY — October 29, 2026. Residents who bicycle or walk near Veterans Park can trace a proposal for a separated route through the park’s lower bowl in the neighborhood’s published improvement-project archive. The item, NCP2435, Veterans Park Bike Path Segment 4, was described with a $330,000 planning estimate in the neighborhood archive.
What route was proposed?
The description calls for constructing a bicycle path separated from Veterans Drive, passing through the natural “bowl” area close to the existing pedestrian trail and continuing toward the lower end of Veterans Park. It is a segment-specific proposal, not a commitment to reconstruct all of Veterans Drive or create an uninterrupted new route to the shoreline.
Why separation would matter
A route apart from vehicle lanes could improve comfort for people who prefer avoiding direct interaction with motor traffic on a grade. However, the archived project description does not provide completed environmental analysis, an approved cross-section or verified design for every crossing. Trail grading, emergency access and park habitat conditions would all need attention if the project proceeds.
Is $330,000 available now?
Not established. This figure comes from a historical neighborhood NCIP project listing, rather than a confirmed October 2026 appropriation. California58 has not verified that Segment 4 remains funded or whether any construction took place after the original nomination. The city should be asked for the current project status under NCP2435.
How it differs from the other Skyline work
Veterans Park’s path is a recreation and mobility proposal, separate from Wyndemere drainage work and the Skyline Forest Drive/Holman Highway bridge maintenance entry. The distinction matters for residents who want to know whether public money is focused on safe travel, recreation amenities or drainage infrastructure.
Original project description: Neighborhood NCIP archive, NCP2435. Monterey city meeting records should be used to establish any current funding or construction action.
